Springtime on the farm is sure to be an eventful ordeal! Cowgirl Kate and her pal, Cocoa are certainly keeping busy, helping Kate's parents by going on night watch, to keep an eye on all of the animals expecting springtime babies. Luckily for Kate and Cocoa, the night and the following days become very eventful, and the two team up to share with readers a great deal of information relevant to spring animal babies.

Children love reading about animals - baby ones in particular! There is no doubt in my mind that this will be a hit with beginning readers and even younger readers who are being read to. The text is somewhat extensive for beginning readers, but when breaking it down into the chapters provided and coupling the story with the picture context clues, children should have no problem comprehending this one! I think I will add this to my list of titles to include in the Animals, Animals Everywhere unit or the Growing and Changing unit in my classroom!

Learning/Reading Activity:
  • When reading with your child(ren), be sure they are using context clues to help understand the text. Test their reading comprehension by asking your child to complete the Animals and their Babies worksheet that can be downloaded here. You may need to read the words to them if they are beginning readers!
  • Play Animal Baby Memory on National Geographic Kids.
